Survey - Help Get Your Tournament!

Written by Glenn // 7/18/2008 03:24:00 PM
Please inform as many people as you know about this. Your answers will make a difference!

Many of you know I'm going to the ESPN Brawl tourney Saturday at Dave and Busters in San Diego. I'll be doing some shoutcasting along with MikeHAZE and JTB (those two will do the bulk of the work).

I really want to make these videos special, so I also plan on some cut-in scenes of the players, and possibly some interviews with the winners once the matches are done.

OK, so here's the deal. Every match that has shoutcasting will be posted on Get Your Tournament. Overall, 75 percent of the videos recorded will go on Get Your Tournament.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no time or size limit for posting videos here.

What would you prefer?
1. A full, uninterrupted match.
2. The matches broken by rounds.

Let me give you some things to think about:

* -- A match in Smash usually lasts 6-10 minutes. The maximum would be 21 minutes for preliminaries, 35 minutes for semifinals and finals.

* -- Smash is the only fighting game I know of that has matches broken up on YouTube by round.

* -- The last time I had shoutcasting on my videos, there was some good commentary that happened in-between the rounds, and it was cut off.

* -- I said in a previous entry that I'm going to move almost all of the videos over to Get Your Tournament. That is non-negotiable. In moving the videos to my site, I would like to create a format that is of my own, but if there's an overwhelming response to "keep tradition," then I'll leave it as such.

OK people, let's go!

ESPN: Favre's impact on 5 teams

Written by Glenn // 7/14/2008 06:40:00 PM
ESPN, which has been on the ball in regard to the Brett Favre saga, has now started asking questions about his Madden 09 status.

Remember, in the game, he's not with the Packers, and not associated with any other team in the game.

ESPN ran a simulation with Favre on five teams. A quick synopsis:

* -- Three of the five teams had winning records with Favre. All five teams had losing records without Favre.
* -- Green Bay was 9-7 with Favre, 6-10 without.
* -- Minnesota was Favre's "best team," 11-5.
* -- Atlanta (Favre's former team before being traded) was better without him (7-9 vs. 6-10)

ESPN was told that Favre, who will be a 99 in the game, will likely drop to a 95 if he plays. I can't understand either rating. Sure he's the cover person and he's a first-ballot Hall of Famer. However, to bump him up 10 or 6 points from a year before is a really bad call.

Now, if EA were to make two different Favres, like Green Bay Favre and Gunslinger Favre (much like how they do Tiger Woods and Sunday Tiger Woods), that would suit the game a lot better.

Favre or not, Packers might not be worthy in Madden 09

Let's join the rest of the Internet, blogosphere and radio waves in talking about Brett Favre who, as of this writing, is still a retired Green Bay Packers quarterback.

While I (and no doubt, a lot of others) believed he was retired for good back in March, he has an itch to play an 18th season, Green Bay or not. The latest is that he has asked for his release, but the Packers won't grant it.

Let's look at this from a Madden 09 standpoint because, first of all, take a glance at the person who is on the cover.

Now, take a look at the picture you see here on the right. That is the offensive lineup for the Green Bay Packers in Madden 09. The three quarterbacks for Title Town's team is Aaron Rodgers (starter), Brian Brohm and Matt Flynn.

No Brett Favre.

There's no doubt that any Green Bay user will probably go with Rodgers just because the backups are both rookies (Brohm from Louisville and Flynn from Louisiana State).

Rodgers also has the highest rating of the three quarterbacks (83), so Packers users will almost be inclined to go with him. I'll be searching for his internal statistics, but I don't think anything will stick out other than maybe his accuracy (20-for-28 in 2007).

In Madden 08, Favre, who was an 89 overall, had an average accuracy rating (86) but a strong arm (98). Will Rodgers have anything like that? Doubtful.

But I believe the Packers' troubles go deeper than just the quarterback, Favre or no Favre. Their running game is average, and that is needed at the very least to set up the passing game. They're not New England, where you can pass all day and hope for spec catches. The Packers need some play-action set-ups.

Green Bay wasn't used too much in tournament play last year. Favre or not, it's going to stay that way another year.
