Brackets, signups released for EVO

An estimated 105 players have signed up for the Evolution Fighting Game Championships' "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" tournament, scheduled to begin this weekend in Las Vegas.

The player list was revealed Wednesday; EVO tournament organizers said they would not accept any door registrations, and every player had to sign up online.

It was one of the many changes in place for the six-game fightfest, set to take place at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

Because registration was all done online, the bracket could be made ahead of time. Players could head to the EVO Web site and see what division they will be in. Almost every competition has eight divisions.

One of the many questions leading up to the tournament was how many Smash players would register. The ruleset featured items and smash balls in play, as well as a counter-pick system different than the one established by the community.

Last year, 270 players attended the Melee competition, and many believed that the Brawl event, with a ruleset similar to the one in the community, would gather nearly double the amount.

Instead, players were told they would have to play under these radical rules. Many players have said no to attending, with some urging people not to go in a way to show the tournament organizers they won't stand for their ruleset.

The rules haven't scared away everyone, though.

Among the list of scheduled attendants is Westminster's Ken Hoang, last year's Melee champion. His brother, Mike, is also scheduled to attend. The two have rarely made their presence felt in the Brawl era, although Mike Hoang attended the San Diego Brawl event at Dave and Busters in San Diego last month.

Another player that has signed up is Culver City's Nick Bardol, who finished in third this past weekend at the Aznforce V Smash Tournament in Lake Forest.

Marco "Oats" Salazar, the No. 13 ranked player in San Diego, has also signed up for the tournament.

From the East Coast, one of the more notable names is Antoine "Wes" Hall, considered one of the best Samus players during the Melee era.
