State's first big M.K. Wii tourney is Saturday

The state's first big "Mario Kart Wii" tournament is scheduled to take place 1 p.m. Saturday at Shuffle and Cut Games in Rancho Cucamonga.

The competition is being run by Get Your Tournament. The cost to enter is $5 per person.

Several stellar time-trial players have made plans to attend. However, the tournament will have basic items in play (green shells, red shells, bananas, mushrooms).

Although a "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" tournament is scheduled to take place at the same time at Shuffle and Cut, it's unlikely it will happen because of the Nexus Gaming Tournament, which is happening Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in San Bernardino.

The Mario Kart Wii tournament will be broken up into two parts: Qualifying and Races. The qualifying will last as long as one hour, with everyone trying to gain the fastest one-lap time on SNES Mario Circuit 3. The top 16 players will then try to survive three rounds of four races each in hopes of winning the championship.

Saturday's Mario Kart tournament means there should be something for all players to do in Southern California. There's the "King of Cali" Madden tournament in Compton with a proposed prize pool that could exceed $1,000, Nexus Gaming's Brawl tournament in which the winner will earn $500, and a secondary Brawl tournament at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park.
