Silva wins Nexus' Brawl tournament
Palm Springs' Tom Silva defeated the top two "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" players in Southern California en route to winning the Team Nexus Brawl tournament Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in San Bernardino.
Silva beat Alex Fuentes, the No. 2 player in Southern California, in the championship match. Before that, he defeated Ryan Burger, the top-ranked player, in the winners bracket final. Both matches were 3-0 decisions.
Silva, ranked sixth in the Southern California Power Rankings, won $500 for winning the tournament; Fuentes took home $250 and Burger $75.
There were more than 125 entrants, putting the event near the top of the scales in terms of participation for a Brawl competition. However, the event didn't begin until the evening. By the time Silva won the tournament, it was about 1:30 a.m. Sunday.
The finish time isn't new for a Nexus tournament; a year ago for their Melee competition, it ended at 2 a.m. the next day with no winner -- the two finalists, Ken Hoang and Joel Alvarado, decided to split the winnings.
There was no concession Sunday morning, in part because of the tournament organizers' rule put in place that the championship match had to be played.
