Last Madden event of season set for Saturday

Add a "Madden 08" tournament to the list of big events scheduled for this weekend.

The "King of Cali" Tournament, organized by Primetime Gamers, is scheduled to take place 3 p.m. Saturday in Compton. It might be the last big event before "Madden 09" is released in August.

As of Thursday evening, 18 players have registered for the tournament, nearly everyone from California but some from nearby Western states. Among the registered participants include New West members Eric "Problem" Velarde (pictured) and David "One9" Stepney.

Davis "Madden" player Michael Degroot, who came close to winning a Madden Challenge event last year, has also registered for the event.

Tournament organizer Anthony Gray said he's hoping for 32 participants, which would guarantee a $3,200 prize pool.

The in-game rules for the tournament are standard. However, players cannot buy back into the event. All players are guaranteed at least three games, Gray said.

The location of the tournament will be 306 W. Compton Blvd., Compton.
