Berlin, Birmingham to play for European Championship

The Berlin Allianz defeated the Stockholm Magnetik, 21-20 to win the Championship Gaming Series' EU Regional Title on Friday in Santa Monica.

With the win, Berlin (pictured in this file photo) secured an automatic berth in the upcoming World Final team tournament, set to take place later this summer.

Berlin will be joined by the Birmingham Salvo, which defeated the London Mint, 27-14 in the UK Championship.

The two teams will play for the European Championship on Saturday afternoon, while London and Stockholm will compete for a wildcard berth in the World Final.

Berlin 21, Stockholm 20: Berlin couldn't celebrate until both of its "Forza Motorsport 2" drivers finished the race.

Stockholm needed at least five points in the final event of the night (first and third place) to claim victory. It got the first place -- Thomas Thorsell grabbed the checkered flag -- but both Berlin players kept Fabien Clement in fourth.

Berlin won the match despite losing three of the five events.

Berlin received a big boost when Livia Teernstra shut out Stockholm's Sophie Breton, 5-0 in a "Dead or Alive 4" match.

Aside from the Forza contest, Stockholm took home wins in "Counter-Strike Source" and "FIFA 08."

Birmingham 27, London 14: In the United Kingdom Regional, Birmingham had its way with London.

The Salvo routed London in the Counter-Strike contest, 14-4. The match was played on de_dust2, and each half went 7-2 for the winners.

One of the biggest surprises of the day came when Birmingham's Michael "Bazza" Barrett pulled off a 2-1 upset win over stellar "FIFA 08" player Chris Bullard.

Bullard had an own goal, and Barrett followed up with another tally to go ahead 2-0.

In a sibling "Dead or Alive 4" contest, Birmingham's Sarah Harrison prevailed over her sister, Ruth Harrison, 5-0.
